............the process never stops
What does that mean?
I didn't come up with that phrase. My clients did. And after I heard it enough times, I finally figured out what they meant (sometimes it takes me a while:).
It refers to the two way street of the client and I learning from each other. On one end, as we work together, I am always learning more and getting better at understanding what the client "really" does -- what that competitive edge is. Sometimes it takes a while because, much like some of the racers I know, often the client doesn't exactly know (or at least can't articulate) what that is -- to him, it's just natural, and he is often vaguely surprised that everybody can't see, do or understand the things he does. One of the more fun things I get to do is explain (once I figure it out) to him what that "magic" is. That can significantly change the way he operates once he finally understands what his customers or clients are really paying him for.
On the other end is the never ending process of teaching the client about the organization, business, tax, title law, legal liability, etc. issues that he needs to know in order to grow his business without it eventually careening out of control. When we are talking about a particular problem we sometimes joke that we usually take twenty minutes to solve a two minute problem, meaning that we are always trying to figure out the "why" behind the problem. Understanding that is what lets us adjust the system(s) so that when similar issues arise in the future, they are just "business as usual", with the processes, infrastructure, forms, etc. handling them as a matter of course.
So to me, the fun really is the process, and (so far, at least) it seems to never stop.
As one of my racing buddies says, "We may not win, but we definitely deserve to be on the track".
Sound like you? Let me know.
